The Prius became the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle when it was released in Japan in 1997. Three years later, the Prius was available worldwide. It has since gone on to become the globe’s best selling hybrid car. The new model features a cutting-edge modular chassis and its body is more aerodynamic than ever, enabling it to achieve even greater fuel efficiency.
The new Prius is the first car to benefit from Toyota Next Generation Architecture (TNGA). This modular platform ensures that the vehicle has a stiffer body shell, which is produced with greater efficiency to create a car that is nicer looking, easier to drive and better specified. The Prius now benefits from a sleeker design and has a distinctly sporty bearing which is enhanced by a lower roofline and angled bonnet. The introduction of black C-pillars gives the sense of a floating roof, and an expansive front windscreen provides excellent visibility. LED lights are positioned at the front and rear of the vehicle. Bi-LED headlights efficiently use single bulbs to produce low and high-beam illumination. These rocket-shaped front headlamps perfectly encapsulate the progressive look of the car.
It isn’t just the exterior that has received an overhaul. The cabin has a more refined feel than before, most notably with the greater-quality materials used for the doors and dashboards. Metallic finishes on air vents and elsewhere complement the highly-polished piano-like surfaces offered by a choice of Black or Cool Grey colour scheme. Toyota has worked hard to improve sound-dampening materials used in the car’s construction. Consequently, passengers can now enjoy a much quieter ride than before. In conjunction with an adjustable steering wheel, an electrically-operated driver’s seat helps you find your perfect position. There is room for five occupants and, with an expanded 502-litre boot, the new Prius makes for an ideal family vehicle.
The introduction of TNGA has helped the new Prius achieve a lower centre of gravity and improved suspension. The introduction of a ‘sport’ mode enables you to get more out of the Prius than was previously possible. A 1.8-litre petrol engine, in conjunction with a smaller and lighter electric engine, provides power when you need it and a responsiveness that is more akin to that of a regular car. In petrol engine mode, the new Prius can deliver approximately 52mpg. In combination with the electric engine, as much as 94mpg is possible. CO2 emissions are as low as 70g/km in petrol mode, reaching zero when only the electric engine alone is being used.
A colour Head-Up Display ensures that essential information, such as speed and energy readings, remain in your eyeline. Configurable dual 4.2-inch colour screens are devoted to a speedometer, in the first instance, and a range of data that includes navigation functions, drive modes and more.
If you have a Qi-enabled phone, you will be able to charge it wirelessly, thanks to the vehicle’s integrated charging tray. Simple Intelligent Park Assist is a feature that helps you manoeuvre in and out of parking spaces while all you need to do is operate the brakes.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert provides an audible and visual alert whenever an unseen vehicle encroaches if you are pulling out of a parking spot.
