Having pioneered the mainstream adoption of cleaner engine technology with its hybrid car family, Toyota’s commitment to responsible manufacturing is unquestionable. And now Toyota GB has taken a major step towards reducing its carbon footprint with a programme to reduce the emissions produced at its headquarters. The initiative has gained official recognition from the Carbon Trust, and means the brand is now a sector leader in this area.
Toyota GB achieved an unbeaten assessment score of 85 percent following re-certification, meaning it is now the highest-scoring automotive firm in the UK for governance, carbon accounting, and carbon management. The assessment focused on Toyota’s Surrey base, rather than several of its sites as was the case previously. This presented a greater challenge to deliver further emissions reductions, but the implementation of a number of measures has seen the site’s carbon footprint shrink by 2.6 percent since March 2012.
The Carbon Trust has been vocal in its praise for the automaker, stating that its “ambitious programmes” demonstrated a commitment that “goes right to the heart of the organisation”.
Emissions reduction measures include the introduction of low-energy LED lights, and contribute to a wider goal of lessening the impact of the carmaker’s operations on the environment. Toyota is also working pro-actively to not only prevent harm to the environment, but encourage the growth of its surrounding ecosystem. In a first, the manufacturer has partnered with Kew’s Royal Botanic Gardens to stimulate the growth of native plants and nurture animal habitats. Similar landscaping efforts from the Royal Botanic Gardens are taking place at Toyota’s Derbyshire factory, as well as its European office in Brussels.
Toyota’s Manager for Corporate Planning and CSR, Thomas Rosselle, commented: “We’re delighted to receive the new certification from the Carbon Trust. It is further tangible evidence of the continuous improvements we are making in our wide-ranging environmental programme. This is more than just getting the figures right; we also strive to engage awareness among our staff and in the wider communities where we work.”
