Ford’s popular family hatchback just got even better. Now in its fourth generation, it features a new design and the cleanest drive yet. In fact, it is altogether the brand’s most advanced European car, thanks to a raft of in-car aids and safety technology that come as standard.
The new Ford Focus has an all-new design language, giving it sharp, clean looks and undeniable athleticism. Crisp lines and concave shapes combine with a squatter stance and long bonnet, which give a nod to classic sports car design. There is nothing old-fashioned about this model though: shapely headlights and a revised grille keep the Focus bang on trend, while the tapering roofline completes the dynamic look.
The model is also wider than previous generations, with the cabin set further back to allow for increased interior space. At the rear, the badging has been replaced with chrome lettering to enhance the premium feel, which is set off by the striking new wheel design.
Families will find themselves enjoying more room than before, thanks to an extended wheelbase which adds 53mm to the interior. This manifests as increased rear legroom, making this car a truly great option for those whose kids are growing up fast. Middle seat passengers also benefit, with the flat floor improving comfort, while luggage is better accommodated due to a larger boot.
The interior design takes its cues from the latest Fiesta, focusing around a large touchscreen that offers easy access to all the car’s controls. The premium feel of the exterior is carried through too, with high-quality materials, fine finishes and expertly contoured seating that is designed to support on even the longest drives.
The all-new Focus features a raft of technologies as standard. Ford’s SYNC 3 system is available with every trim level, giving drivers unrivalled connectivity. Opting for the FordPass Connect modem gives access to live traffic updates and WiFi hotspot among other benefits.
A plethora of driver assistance technologies are also included to ensure every journey is stress-free. Ford Co-Pilot360 incorporates Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go and Lane Centring as well as Active Park Assist 2 to help manage acceleration, braking and manoeuvring. Such intelligent tech means driving is effortless and enjoyable like never before.
In a family car, safety is everything and Ford has pulled out all the stops when it comes to protection. It has got everything the modern driver expects, from stability control and inflatable seatbelts to Blind Spot Monitoring and Cross Traffic Alert. There’s more though: Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection warns drivers of potential collisions and automatically applies the brakes if no response is made. This is especially useful at low speeds.
Full LED headlights can be specified too, which prevent other drivers being dazzled and have a beam-widening function to improve visibility at junctions.
A familiar engine line-up sits under the bonnet of the new Ford Focus. The three-cylinder EcoBoost petrol variants have been adapted to improve efficiency, while a selection of EcoBlue diesels are on offer and boast the model’s cleanest drive yet. Stop/start technology also comes as standard to reduce fuel consumption and emissions in urban environments.
The Focus is built on a new C2 platform, which features Continuously Controlled Dampening, a system that monitors suspension, steering and other elements to produce the most comfortable ride possible. Three drive modes can also be selected, enabling motorists to adjust the car’s responsiveness according to their preferences or mood.
