What a year 2016 was for Ford

Last year was quite a year for Ford and it looks as though 2017 is shaping up to be even better for the car manufacturer, but for now let’s focus on last year...

2016 saw Ford celebrate the 40th birthday of one of its most popular models, the Fiesta. Since rolling off the production line in 1976 the Fiesta has become Europe’s best-selling car with over 17 million Fiestas in homes worldwide. Not only did the Fiesta retain its title as Europe’s best-selling car, it also listed as the UK’s best-selling car with more Fiestas sold in the UK than any other model.

On the winning front Ford also achieved a number of other accolades throughout the year, picking up a 5-star NCAP safety rating for the all-new Ford Edge, whilst adding other awards to the trophy cabinet including ‘Best Hot Hatchback’ for the Focus ST and ‘Best Car Under £10,000’ for the KA+ at the Carbuyer Awards.

Saying goodbye to the Ford Ka, last year saw the introduction of the brand new Ford KA+; a small car which offers outstanding interior space and excellent fuel efficiency whilst being incredibly fun to drive. Available at a value price, the KA+ range starts from £9,245 offering a surprisingly spacious compact car.

Combining 350 PS with four-wheel drive, a ‘drift’ mode and launch control 2016 also saw the new Ford Focus RS arrive, one of the most eagerly anticipated cars of the year. Featuring a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine the Focus RS delivers 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 165mph. Additional packs make the hot hatch a car for all seasons through the addition of a heated steering wheel and seats. Scooping up a number of top awards and accolades including ‘Hot Hatch of the Year’ from Auto Express Magazine and ‘2016 Car of the Year’ from Top Gear Magazine, the Ford Focus RS arrived making with a big impact.

Expansion within Ford’s SUV range was also seen last year as the new Ford Kuga was unveiled. Offering a more technologically advanced, sporty and efficient Kuga, the model’s redesign featured new headlights and trapezoidal grille plus sophisticated new technologies including SYNC 3, hands-free parking and Active City Stop, a collision detection system to make driving simpler, safer and more enjoyable.

Ford’s innovative SYNC 3 communications and entertainment system allows drivers to control their smartphones, audio, navigation and climate functions through simple voice commands. With an 8-inch touchscreen, drivers can easily locate nearby restaurants, petrol stations and car parks through simple sentences such as ‘I need petrol’ or ‘I need to park’, revolutionising the way motorists interact with their car.

Towards the end of the 2016, Ford released the specification of the next generation Fiesta. Set to be the world’s most technologically advanced small car, the Fiesta is available in four trim levels – Titanium, ST-Line, Active and Vignale and is the first Ford to feature Pedestrian Detection systems which can help prevent collisions with pedestrians.
