Ford Focus ST given a facelift for 2015

Ford’s 2015 Focus ST is the latest in a long line of powerful hot hatches that also delivers superb value for money. It arrives this year with a facelift in line with the carmaker’s new styling signature, and gets a power boost to make it better than ever.

Ford’s sporty new design

Compare the ST to its closest rival – the understated Volkswagen Golf GTI – and the differences are clear. The Focus is unmistakably a high performer, and arrives with a number of new design details. The front end gets a wider mesh grille and a new sculpted bonnet, along with rectangular fog lights and slimmer headlamps. Stylish 19-inch alloy wheels carry the car confidently, and the exterior can be specified in one of a range of striking paint finishes such as Tangerine Scream.

Inside there are more sports features as standard, notably the Recaro seats, carbon fibre trim, sports steering wheel, metal pedals and extra gauges mounted to the dashboard. ST-1 is the entry-level trim grade, joined in the line-up by ST-2 and the range-topping ST-3. Half leather trim, dual-zone climate control and a heated windscreen come fitted to the ST-2, while upgrading further adds heated seats and bi-Xenon headlights.

Uprated excitement

On top of the obvious visual changes, Ford has made tweaks under the bonnet too. The previous 2.5-litre five-cylinder petrol engine has been replaced by a more refined 2.0-litre EcoBoost unit, without any compromise on power. It produces 22bhp more at 247bhp, and will hit 60mph from standing in around 6.5 seconds. At the same time it returns a surprising 41.5mpg. But if fuel economy is the priority, Ford also offers a TDCi-powered example – the first time a diesel ST has gone on sale. The 182bhp 2.0-litre powertrain has plenty of energy, and with ample torque available throughout the gears it accelerates confidently in true Focus ST fashion.

Controlled power

Keeping all of the hatchback’s power in check are various active technologies, which add up to make the Focus ST one of the safest in the segment. Traction control, stability control and torque vectoring are all fitted at no extra cost, while strong performance brakes slow and stop the vehicle in a controlled manner from any speed. There’s also the option of a Driver Assistance Pack for more driver aid systems, so it’s no surprise Euro NCAP awarded the new Focus ST a five-star rating.
