There are many vehicular components that require regular checking, not least a car’s tyres. These rings of reinforced rubber are a vehicle’s only point of contact with the road and are therefore usually the first elements to suffer from wear and tear.
Tyres with the correct tread depth will help you to enjoy safe motoring, keeping you, your family and friends as secure as possible.
While safety is of paramount importance, the secondary risks of a £2,500 fine and the loss of three penalty points are not inconsiderable too – and that’s for each tyre!
The minimum tyre tread depth required by law is 1.6 millimetres, but safety experts recommend that anything less than three millimetres should trigger a replacement.
One useful rule of thumb is the ‘20p test’. If the outer band of a twenty pence piece is visible when you insert it between treads, it’s time to change your tyres. If you test each tyre in this way, once a month, you are helping to ensure the safety of you and your co-passengers and fellow road users.
